Ecumenical Carnival Madness in German ‘Catholic’ Church

It’s carnival season, and in Germany, that means it’s time for the annual “Fools’ Masses” or at least “Fools’ Liturgies”. Oftentimes these absurdities come in an ecumenical package, meaning it’s Novus Ordo adherents (‘Catholics’) and Lutherans celebrating together.

A video recently appeared on Instagram that shows what took place on Saturday evening, Feb. 7, 2026, in the ‘Catholic’ Church of Mary’s Assumption (Mariä Himmelfahrt) in the little town of Höchstädt, part of the diocese of Augsburg. Aichach is a small town in Germany about 30 miles northwest of Munich. Its main Novus Ordo church is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary (Mariä Himmelfahrt) and is also known as the Stadtpfarrkirche (city parish church). It is a gorgeous building in the style of a late-Gothic basilica.
