On Jan. 3, 1949, Bishop Antonio de Castro Mayer (1904-1991) became the local ordinary of the diocese of Campos, Brazil. He had been appointed coadjutor by Pope Pius XII ten months earlier.

In 1953, His Excellency issued two important documents in his diocese, one entitled ‘Pastoral Letter on the Problems of the Modern Apostolate’, the other ‘Catechism of Timely Truths Opposed to Contemporary Errors’.
