Seven Years Later: Benedict XVI’s Summorum Pontificum Critically Examined

The Indult Mass: beautiful to behold, just like the Forbidden Fruit

July 7 marked the seven-year anniversary of the release of Summorum Pontificum, the much-acclaimed “Apostolic Letter” Motu Proprio of “Pope” Benedict XVI. At the time, we published a critical examination of this document and its accompanying explanatory letter, warning traditionalists everywhere that the “Ratzinger Indult” was not what it seemed and put the Traditional Latin Mass on equal footing with the abominable Modernist Novus Ordo Missae of Paul VI, outrageously claiming that the two were simply two expressions of the same Roman rite!

Nevertheless, indult traditionalists throughout the world hailed the document as a great victory for Catholic Tradition and claimed it had “freed the Mass.” Concerns were quickly dismissed or minimized. Still today many people are acting as though Benedict’s document were cause to celebrate.

But is it? He who looks at the actual legislation and analyzes the claims being made about the 1962 Missal and the 1969-70 Novus Ordo Missal will come to the conclusion that it is simply more Modernist poppycock served to good-willed but gullible people with only one clear purpose: to keep traditionalists in the Vatican II Church from defecting, and to lure some who have left, back inside.

Benedict XVI’s Motu Proprio was simply the Vatican’s latest attempt to keep the whole New Church from falling apart even further, offering traditionalists within it to “coexist” by letting them have a larger traditional side altar in the Modernist cathedral so they don’t abandon it altogether.

“Pope” Francis, of course, is no friend of the 1962 Missal, calling it a “fad” for the young that “doesn’t need much attention.”
