Vatican II condemned in advance!
Now in English: Catechism of Timely Truths Opposed to Contemporary Errors by Bp. Antônio de Castro Mayer

On Jan. 3, 1949, Bishop Antonio de Castro Mayer (1904-1991) became the local ordinary of the diocese of Campos, Brazil. He had been appointed coadjutor by Pope Pius XII ten months earlier.
In 1953, His Excellency issued two important documents in his diocese, one entitled ‘Pastoral Letter on the Problems of the Modern Apostolate’, the other ‘Catechism of Timely Truths Opposed to Contemporary Errors’. Although they have been available in Portuguese and French for a long time, it is only now that they are finally available in English, under one cover — including also a set of specific guidelines Bp. de Castro Mayer issued to his diocesan clergy concerning these matters.
Translated from the French edition, these three texts have now been published as one book by Shield of Faith Press and can be purchased directly from their web site:
- Catechism of Timely Truths Opposed to Contemporary Errors by Bishop Antônio de Castro Mayer (1953)
The English version is available both in paperback and as an e-book (.epub format) at the above link.
From the description at the publisher’s web site:
Discover a traditional Catholic bishop’s comments on what would become some of the key reforms or doctrines of Vatican II: the “active participation” of the faithful, the “priesthood of the laity,” the replacement of the altar with a table, Mass facing the people, the elimination of images of saints, contempt for popular piety, the new methods of apostolate, a new conception of spiritual life, a new conception of morality, sympathy for Socialism, Liberalism, Separation of Church and State, and more.
The back cover of the book states:
Vatican II Condemned in Advance by a Catholic Bishop
This Catechism was written in 1953, nine years before the opening of the Vatican II [council], and sixteen years before the promulgation of the new Mass.
Yet it strikingly features and condemns some of the key reforms or doctrines of Vatican II: the “active participation” of the faithful, the “priesthood of the laity,” the replacement of the altar with a table, Mass facing the people, the elimination of images of saints, contempt for popular piety, the methods of apostolate, spiritual life, the so-called new morality, Socialism, Liberalism, the relationship between Church and State, etc.
Bishop de Castro Mayer goes back to the principles, and in order to condemn the errors of our times emphasizes the corresponding truth of Catholic doctrine.

English-speaking Catholics have reason to be grateful to Shield of Faith Press for making this important book available in our time. It can assist in demonstrating the incompatibility of the Roman Catholic religion with the ‘counterfeit Catholicism’ produced by the Second Vatican Council (1962-65).
Another very timely work that is now available in English for the first time, likewise published by Shield of Faith, is this one:
- The Anti-Christian Conspiracy by Mgr. Henri Delassus (1910)
Bishop de Castro Mayer remained in his post as bishop of Campos until 1981. Seven years later, he joined Abp. Marcel Lefebvre in consecrating four bishops for the Society of St. Pius X in 1988, against the express prohibition of John Paul II. It is unclear whether Bp. de Castro Mayer believed John Paul II to be the Pope at that point, but Abp. Lefebvre certainly did.
Bishop de Castro Mayer died on Apr. 25, 1991.
