Bad arguments refuted…

Podcast: Athanasius Schneider, Taylor Marshall, and the Traditional Latin Mass
(TRADCAST EXPRESS 221)

Our latest podcast episode, TRADCAST EXPRESS 221, has been published. Its main topic is the Traditional Latin Mass of the Roman Catholic rite, which has been in the news again recently on account of the Vatican consistory that took place Jan. 7-8, 2026, which was supposed to include discussion on the sacred liturgy.

In this new 26-minute episode, we consider an argument made by Bp. Athanasius Schneider, auxiliary Novus Ordo bishop in Astana, Kazakhstan, and we completely torpedo Dr. Taylor Marshall‘s recent (amusingly insistent) contention that the perpetuity clause of Pope St. Pius V’s bull Quo Primum gives all priests a perpetual right to offer Mass according to the traditional rite, regardless of what a subsequent Pope may decree. We evaluate these arguments on the basis of both Schneider’s and Marshall’s own theological assumptions, to demonstrate that their own principles contradict them.

In particular, this TRADCAST EXPRESS episode considers:

  • Bp. Schneider’s proposal to Leo XIV that he publish an Apostolic Constitution to settle the liturgy wars — but would Schneider himself accept the binding force of such a document if it came down against the Traditional Mass?
  • If Paul VI was Pope, then his Apostolic Constitution Missale Romanum did away with the Traditional Mass and made the Novus Ordo Missae (‘New Mass’) mandatory — he himself said so and confirmed it subsequently
  • Whether Benedict XVI was correct in saying that the Traditional Mass had never been abolished and was therefore always permitted
  • Whether a Pope can bind a subsequent Pope on a matter of liturgical discipline
  • What Pope St. Pius V meant when he legislated that the Traditional Mass could be celebrated “in perpetuity”
  • How Pope St. Pius X could revoke Pope St. Pius V’s codification of the Breviary, which had also been decreed to be valid “in perpetuity”
  • The Jesuits were suppressed “in perpetuity” by Pope Clement XIV
  • What actor and director Mel Gibson has to do with all of this
