Horror in the Vatican: Nude Man stands on High Altar of St. Peter’s Basilica
(we have redacted the image to make it less offensive)
[UPDATE June 3: Vatican holds rite of reparation after naked man climbs onto St. Peter’s altar]
The month of June 2023 began with a horrific profanation of what is probably the holiest place in all of Vatican City.
On June 1, 2023, a man climbed onto the high altar of St. Peter’s Basilica and undressed himself completely, apparently in protest over the Russia-Ukraine war. The man had letters written on his back, saying: “Save Children in Ukraine”. He was taken into custody.
Here are some initial reports:
- Naked man jumps on altar of St. Peter’s to protest Ukraine war (Reuters)
- Shock in St. Peter’s Basilica: A man jumped, naked, onto the altar (Silere Non Possum)
- Vatican, a man undresses on the altar of St Peter’s: protest against the war in Ukraine (Il Messaggero)
The Silere Non Possum blog blames the Archpriest of St. Peter’s, ‘Cardinal’ Mauro Gambetti (b. 1965), for the security failure:
This is the result of the bad management that Mauro Gambetti has been carrying out since 20 February 2021. Silere non possum has often denounced the activities of the Franciscan cardinal, who has promoted many people and brought them to the offices of the Fabbrica di San Pietro but left St Peter’s Basilica without security personnel.
Be that as it may, the episode speaks for itself. We will merely add some notes to put this in historical context.
First, we must understand that St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the most sacred places on earth, specifically its high altar, where the Divine Sacrifice of our Lord was offered for hundreds of years by true Popes.
The Second Person of the Most Holy Trinity was made present countless times on this altar by genuine Popes, true successors of St. Peter, the Prince of the Apostles, whose bones are found directly underneath it. The Sacrifice of Calvary was offered there to the Triune God at the hands of the Vicars of Christ, including the great Pope St. Pius X (r. 1903-1914).
The high altar of St. Peter’s has long been defiled by the Novus Ordo Missae being offered on it, the ‘New Mass’ of ‘Pope’ Paul VI, which can be considered the New Testament version of the sacrifice of Cain (cf. Gen 4:3-5):
Even so, the ‘New Mass’ has always been presented by the Vatican pseudo-authorities as a genuinely Catholic thing. To defile a church or an altar with things that are openly non-Catholic or anti-Catholic, adds a whole new level of malice to the matter.
Thus it is perhaps no accident that this latest affront to Almighty God and the Sacred Liturgy comes mere weeks after an invalid Anglican ‘Mass’ and a valid but Coptic Orthodox Divine Liturgy at the papal cathedral of St. John Lateran in Rome. (St. John Lateran has even greater significance to Catholics than St. Peter’s Basilica.)
We should recall, too, that it was on the high altar of St. Peter’s Basilica that Jorge Bergoglio (‘Pope’ Francis) placed that strange bowl-of-dirt offering, or whatever it was, back in 2019 at the conclusion of the Amazon Synod.
The high altar in St. Peter’s is typically used exclusively by the Pope and certainly never by a mere priest. A few years ago, however, Bergoglio decided to change this rigid rule:
In 2017, an Anglican evensong (vespers) liturgy had been held in St. Peter’s Basilica, at the altar of the Chair of St. Peter.
That Bergoglio rented out the historic Sistine Chapel to Porsche for a private corporate event back in 2014, should also not be forgotten.
With all of that, why wouldn’t God allow the high altar of one of the most important churches in all of Christendom to be profaned now by a naked man standing on it?
“And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall defile the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the continual sacrifice, and they shall place there the abomination unto desolation” (Dan 11:31).
“When therefore you shall see the abomination of desolation, which was spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place: he that readeth let him understand. Then they that are in Judea, let them flee to the mountains: And he that is on the housetop, let him not come down to take any thing out of his house: And he that is in the field, let him not go back to take his coat. And woe to them that are with child, and that give suck in those days. But pray that your flight be not in the winter, or on the sabbath. For there shall be then great tribulation, such as hath not been from the beginning of the world until now, neither shall be. And unless those days had been shortened, no flesh should be saved: but for the sake of the elect those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say to you: Lo here is Christ, or there, do not believe him. For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders, insomuch as to deceive (if possible) even the elect. Behold I have told it to you, beforehand” (Mt 24:15-25).
How will ‘Pope’ Francis react? He will probably express his displeasure in an upcoming interview, with a good dose of compassion for the obviously disturbed man and his incredibly noble cause; but surely not more.
Remember: For Bergoglio, the “real” sacrilege is not what happened to the high altar of St. Peter’s, but the Russia-Ukraine War.
