Bergoglio’s joy stopper…
Francis: “Studying Fundamental Theology is One of the Most Boring Things on Earth”
Well this isn’t exactly surprising: Francis doesn’t like studying Fundamental Theology. He finds it incredibly boring.
The Rev. Michael Rogers, a blogging Jesuit in Rome, sent out a tweet on Feb. 17, 2014, in which he relates what “Pope Francis” told him in person: “Studying fundamental theology is one of the most boring things on earth.”
Here is a copy of the tweet:

Fundamental Theology is the branch of Sacred Theology that deals with the theological method, apologetics, and ecclesiology. It is the proper beginning of all theology, and hence extremely important, for if you begin the wrong way, you will most certainly end up in error. A solid book on Fundamental Theology is The Concept of Sacred Theology by the illustrious anti-Modernist Mgr. Joseph Clifford Fenton.
It is not surprising that a Modernist like Jorge Bergoglio wouldn’t know what to do with Fundamental Theology, nor enjoy it. Learning the basics about the most excellent of all the sciences — that of Sacred Theology — isn’t “fun” enough for him. No balloons, no photo ops, no favelas, no soup kitchens, no existential peripheries, you see.
What more wonderful thing could there be for a man who loves God and therefore seeks to know Him ever more intimately, than to explore the depths of the divine science? How could a man who seeks to preach the Gospel and convert people to it not have a great and lasting interest in apologetics, which will enable him to demonstrate to non-believers the reasonableness of the Catholic religion and prepare them for the act and virtue of Faith? How could he not be excited about studying ecclesiology, the Church’s doctrine about herself, the Mystical Body of Christ, the Ark of Salvation?
No, not for Bergoglio. The man who endlessly talks about the “joy” of the Faith, the “joy” of the Gospel, cannot find joy in the science of God. For him, all “joy” stops where theology begins. Think about that one for a while. And keep in mind that knowledge, wisdom, and understanding are three of the seven Gifts of the Holy Ghost.
The Call Me Jorge blog has an interesting post on this story as well:
