Unexpected passing of sedevacantist pioneer…

Sedevacantist Bishop Daniel Dolan, R.I.P. (1951-2022)

The sedevacantist bishop Daniel Lytle Dolan, long-time pastor of Saint Gertrude the Great Church in West Chester, Ohio, died suddenly today, on the Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel, April 26. He was 70 years old.

Fr. Stephen McKenna, one of the priests at St. Gertrude’s, confirmed the death of His Excellency:

At this point, nothing is known regarding the cause of death.

Bishop Dolan, a native of Michigan, had been ordained a priest by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre in 1976. He was consecrated a bishop on Nov. 30, 1993, by Bp. Mark Pivarunas of the Congregation of Mary Immaculate Queen (CMRI), in the lineage of Bp. Pierre-Martin Ngo-dinh-Thuc. Video highlights of Bp. Dolan’s episcopal consecration are available on DVD.

For many years Bp. Dolan worked alongside Fr. Anthony Cekada, who died in 2020, in the Greater Cincinnati area. Whereas Fr. Cekada was a prolific writer, Bp. Dolan focused on preaching. A speech His Excellency gave in France on Aug. 13, 2000, has been transcribed and is available online:

Although originally a part of the Society of St. Pius X, Fr. Daniel Dolan was one of “The Nine” who were famously expelled by the Abp. Lefebvre in 1983, along with other well-known names such as Fathers Donald Sanborn, William Jenkins, Anthony Cekada, Clarence Kelly, and others. (For a re-telling of that story, this free podcast has three of the Nine, incl. Bp. Dolan, recalling the events leading to their expulsion.)

Bp. Dolan was a frequent guest on the Restoration Radio podcast by True Restoration.

Every death is an important reminder that one day God will call us to judgment too, and it may be sooner than we think (see 1 Thess 5:2). Let us pray for the repose of the soul of Bishop Dolan.

Réquiem aetérnam dona ei, Dómine, et lux perpétua lúceat ei. Requiéscat in pace. Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
