Heretic denounces orthodoxy as heresy!

‘Archbishop’ of Sydney: To Say the Jews Are No Longer God’s Chosen People is HERESY!

The ‘Catholic archbishop’ of Sydney, Australia: Anthony Fisher, O.P.

In June of this year, the Great Synagogue of Sydney, Australia, hosted a memorial lecture in honor of its erstwhile chief rabbi, Dr. Raymond Apple (1935-2024), who had passed away on Jan. 19.

It is not clear whether this speech was given on June 25 or June 27, as there is conflicting information about it online. However, it is really of no great concern; the real problem is that this Rabbi Apple Memorial Lecture was delivered by a man who thinks himself to be, and whom the world recognizes as, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Sydney.

We are talking about Anthony Colin Joseph Fisher, O.P. Born in 1960, Fisher was ordained a priest on Sep. 14, 1991, in the problematic 1968 Novus Ordo rite of ordination but by a valid bishop. On July 16, 2003, the false pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop of Sydney; the false pope Benedict XVI made him diocesan ordinary of Parramatta on Jan. 8, 2010; and on Sep. 18, 2014, the false pope Francis appointed Fisher archbishop of Sydney.

The lecture Fisher delivered at the synagogue in June was entitled “Jews and Christians Walking Together: Where Are We in 2024?”, and its full text with footnotes has been made available on the archdiocesan web site.

The following two photos show Fisher at the synagogue. They were published by the Archdiocese of Sydney’s Commission for Ecumenical & Inter-religious Relations. Notice the conspicuous absence of Fisher’s pectoral cross, which he always wears otherwise:

Clearly, Fisher had removed his pectoral cross for this event, lest he offend the Jews by reminding them of the instrument by which the Son of God lovingly redeemed them. (How the Jews regard the cross is explained, for example, in the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia.)

Right: ‘Abp.’ Fisher tells the Jews they’re still God’s Chosen People (and the cross only gets in the way of that).

If St. Paul rebuked St. Peter for eating with the Jewish converts apart from the Gentile converts (see Gal 2:11-15), can you imagine what he would say to a supposed Catholic bishop effectively hiding the cross so the unconverted Jews would be willing to listen to him drone on about the good relations between them since the 1960s — good relations which are due in large part to the fact that the Jews are no longer told they must accept Jesus Christ to be saved and are continually affirmed in their unbelief and in their supposed status as the Chosen People of God?!

Yes, the Apostles, too, preached in synagogues, but that’s precisely the point: they preached the Gospel in synagogues, they didn’t tell the Jews they were still God’s Chosen People and didn’t need to accept their Redeemer! As St. Paul said: “But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews indeed a stumblingblock, and unto the Gentiles foolishness” (1 Cor 1:23).

Instead of assisting Jewish people overcome this “stumblingblock” by helping them to remove the “veil” from their heart, as the Apostles did (cf. 2 Cor 3:13-16), ‘Abp.’ Fisher opts for Vatican II ecumenism. Not only does he fall silent regarding the truth of the Gospel, he has the audacity to explicitly reject the traditional Catholic position on the relationship between Catholics and Jews — sometimes called ‘Supersessionism’ — and outrageously brands it as heresy!

Before we continue, we would like to draw attention to the fact that our most recent podcast, TRADCAST EXPRESS 199, also tackles Fisher’s lecture at the synagogue:

Now let us have a look at Fisher’s exact words regarding Supersessionism, taken from his lecture:

If Christians have not always been good relatives to Jews, if some have indulged prejudice, blaming, or the supersessionist heresy that they have replaced Jews as God’s chosen people, they might be reminded of St Paul. A robust apologist for the new religion, Paul never forgot he was a Jew and owed so much to Judaism.

(‘Abp.’ Anthony Fisher, O.P., “Jews and Christians Walking Together: Where Are We in 2024?”, Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney, June 28, 2024; underlining added.)

Fisher’s entire address is premised on the egregious error that today’s Jews are the Jews of the Old Covenant — as if there were no essential religious difference between a Jewish person today (who explicitly rejects Jesus Christ and His religion) and a Jewish person who lived before the arrival of Christ (who, adhering faithfully to the Old Covenant then in force, looked forward to the arrival of the promised Redeemer).

What is today known as ‘Judaism’ is not the religion of the Old Covenant — it could not possibly be, for that religion came to an end by divine decree with the establishment of the New Covenant: “Now in saying a new, he hath made the former old. And that which decayeth and groweth old, is near its end” (Heb 8:13).

What is today known as ‘Judaism’ is in fact apostate Judaism. It is apostate because it was founded on the high priest Caiphas’ official and definitive rejection of the true Messias, Jesus Christ:

And the high priest rising up, said to him: Answerest thou nothing to the things which these witness against thee? But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest said to him: I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us if thou be the Christ the Son of God. Jesus saith to him: Thou hast said it. Nevertheless I say to you, hereafter you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of God, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Then the high priest rent his garments, saying: He hath blasphemed; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard the blasphemy: What think you? But they answering, said: He is guilty of death.

(Matthew 26:62-66; cf. John 11:49-53)

Regarding the high priest’s rejection of the true Messiah, the Doctor of the Church St. Jerome (c. 340-420) comments:

And by this rending [of] his garments, [Caiaphas] shews that the Jews have lost the priestly glory, and that their High Priest’s throne was vacant. For by rending his garment he rent the veil of the Law which covered him.

(St. Jerome, Commentary on Matthew 26:65; quoted in St. Thomas Aquinas, ed., Catena Aurea: Commentary on the Four Gospels collected out of the Works of the Fathers Vol. I, Part III [Oxford: John Henry Parker, 1842], p. 926.)

Today’s Judaism, therefore, is a diabolical distortion of what was once the true religion (see Jn 4:22) but could not remain such because by its very nature it was only provisional, a mere temporary preparation for greater and eternal realities to come. Thus, with the arrival of the Messiah, the Old Covenant was always meant to give way to the New, as the promise necessarily gives way to its fulfillment:

Behold the days shall come, saith the Lord, and I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Juda: not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers, in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt: the covenant which they made void, and I had dominion over them, saith the Lord. But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel, after those days, saith the Lord: I will give my law in their bowels, and I will write it in their heart: and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

(Jeremias 31:31-33)

Artificially keeping the religion of the promise ‘alive’ when the religion of the fulfillment has already been revealed and instituted, is obviously a frightful and blasphemous perversion; it turns what was once the true and salvific religion (see Jn 4:22) into a bearer of death because its true meaning and function having been frustrated, it will necessarily keep people from accepting the true Messiah and instead lead them to a false one: “I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive” (Jn 5:43).

What is today known as Judaism is, therefore, a kind of zombified carcass, a lifeless shell that has been infused with the teachings of the Talmud and of Kabbalistic mysticism to give it the appearance of life. The true purpose of this apostate Talmudic Judaism is thus to keep people away from the real Messiah and the true fulfillment of the Old Covenant, and to prepare its adherents to accept the Antichrist instead: “For many seducers are gone out into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh: this is a seducer and an antichrist” (2 Jn 7). No wonder the book of the Apocalypse speaks of “them that say they are Jews and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan” (Apoc 2:9)!

In pointing all of this out, we are merely stating facts pertaining to the objective order. We are by no means claiming or implying that each individual adherent of apostate Judaism is of bad will, or seeks to please the devil, or hates Christians, or anything of the kind. No doubt a good majority of today’s Jews, like so many Gentiles, are simply misled — but then that is not really relevant for our purposes here. We are not interested in judging each Jewish person’s state of soul before God, which is not ours to do anyway; we are interested in analyzing and explaining objective facts, regardless of anyone’s intentions, be they good or bad.

Part of the objective order, we might add here, is also the fact that for as long as they refuse to accept the true Messiah, Jesus Christ, today’s Jews cannot be saved. For, although invincible ignorance can excuse from guilt in certain cases, it cannot supply for a lack of belief in those “mysteries of faith which are necessary [for salvation] by a necessity of means, as are especially the mysteries of the Trinity and the Incarnation” (Pope Clement XI, Holy Office Response to Bishop of Quebec, Jan. 25, 1703; Denz. 1349a).

What this means is that evangelizing today’s Jews is of the utmost importance! Yet evangelizing Jewish people is precisely what has been officially rejected by the Novus Ordo Church since the infernal Second Vatican Council (1962-65) and its horrific declaration on non-Christian religions, Nostra Aetate. In a sense, then, ‘Abp.’ Fisher is merely being a loyal adherent of the Vatican II religion:

For Fisher to enlist St. Paul in support of his claim that the Jews were not replaced by the Christians (Catholics) as God’s Chosen People, is not just a blasphemy and a sacrilege but also an incredibly foolish thing to do because it is so easily refuted. After all, it was St. Paul who wrote:

For you, brethren, are become followers of the churches of God which are in Judea, in Christ Jesus: for you also have suffered the same things from your own countrymen, even as they have from the Jews, who both killed the Lord Jesus, and the prophets, and have persecuted us, and please not God, and are adversaries to all men; prohibiting us to speak to the Gentiles, that they may be saved, to fill up their sins always: for the wrath of God is come upon them to the end.

(1 Thessalonians 2:14-16)

That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement of the idea that the apostate Jews are God’s Chosen People.

But there’s more. The following biblical passages were also penned by St. Paul, under divine inspiration:

Thou wilt say then: The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in. Well: because of unbelief they were broken off. But thou standest by faith: be not highminded, but fear. For if God hath not spared the natural branches, fear lest perhaps he also spare not thee. See then the goodness and the severity of God: towards them indeed that are fallen, the severity; but towards thee, the goodness of God, if thou abide in goodness, otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again. (Romans 11:19-23)

Know ye therefore, that they who are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. For you are all the children of God by faith, in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized in Christ, have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek: there is neither bond nor free: there is neither male nor female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you be Christ’ s, then are you the seed of Abraham, heirs according to the promise. (Galatians 3:7,26-29)

But now he hath obtained a better ministry, by how much also he is a mediator of a better testament, which is established on better promises. For if that former had been faultless, there should not indeed a place have been sought for a second. For finding fault with them, he saith: Behold, the days shall come, saith the Lord: and I will perfect unto the house of Israel, and unto the house of Juda, a new testament: Not according to the testament which I made to their fathers, on the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt: because they continued not in my testament: and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. For this is the testament which I will make to the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord: I will give my laws into their mind, and in their heart will I write them: and I will be their God, and they shall be my people: And they shall not teach every man his neighbour and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me from the least to the greatest of them: Because I will be merciful to their iniquities, and their sins I will remember no more. Now in saying a new, he hath made the former old. And that which decayeth and groweth old, is near its end. (Hebrews 8:6-13)

Then said I: Behold, I come to do thy will, O God: he taketh away the first, that he may establish that which followeth. (Hebrews 10:9)

It has been Catholic teaching from the very beginning that the Old Covenant was abrogated, replaced, superseded by the New Covenant. This is taught unequivocally in Sacred Scripture, in Sacred Tradition, and in the Church’s timeless magisterium.

Regarding Sacred Scripture, we have seen a number of passages teaching Supersessionism already. In short, we can say that the Old Testament itself foretells it; Our Lord Himself preached it; and the New Testament as a whole confirms it.

Here are a few more passages from the Gospels indicating that the status of ‘Chosen People’ would transfer from the people of Israel or the Jews to the followers of the New Covenant, the Christians (Catholics):

And I say to you that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven: But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 8:11-12)

Therefore I say to you, that the kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and shall be given to a nation yielding the fruits thereof. (Matthew 21:43)

Therefore having yet one son, most dear to him; he also sent him unto them last of all, saying: They will reverence my son. But the husbandmen said one to another: This is the heir; come let us kill him; and the inheritance shall be ours. And laying hold on him, they killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy those husbandmen; and will give the vineyard to others. And have you not read this scripture, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is made the head of the corner: By the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes. (Mark 12:6-11)

There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you shall see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out. And there shall come from the east and the west, and the north and the south; and shall sit down in the kingdom of God. (Luke 13:28-29)

Then the lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be, when they see him, they will reverence him. Whom when the husbandmen saw, they thought within themselves, saying: This is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours. So casting him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them? He will come, and will destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. Which they hearing, said to him: God forbid. But he looking on them, said: What is this then that is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner? Whosoever shall fall upon that stone, shall be bruised: and upon whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. (Luke 20:13-18)

Not surprisingly, we find clear testimony regarding the replacement of the Old Covenant and its people by the New Covenant and its adherents also transmitted in Sacred Tradition.

For example, Tertullian (c. 155-220) in his treatise Against the Jews (aka An Answer to the Jews) speaks of the “supercession” and “abolition” of the Old Law (in chapters 3 and 6, respectively).

Likewise, St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430), Doctor of the Church, writes:

Thus the sacraments of the Old Testament, which were celebrated in obedience to the law, were types of Christ who was to come; and when Christ fulfilled them by His advent they were done away, and were done away because they were fulfilled. For Christ came not to destroy, but to fulfill. And now that the righteousness of faith is revealed, and the children of God are called into liberty, and the yoke of bondage which was required for a carnal and stiffnecked people is taken away, other sacraments are instituted, greater in efficacy, more beneficial in their use, easier in performance, and fewer in number.

(St. Augustine, Contra Faustum, Book XIX, par. 13)

Perpetually enlightened by God’s revelation as found in Scripture and Tradition, the Catholic magisterium has been extremely clear on the issue as well. Let’s look at some examples.

In 1442, the Council of Florence under Pope Eugene IV taught:

It firmly believes, professes and teaches that the legal prescriptions of the old Testament or the Mosaic law, which are divided into ceremonies, holy sacrifices and sacraments, because they were instituted to signify something in the future, although they were adequate for the divine cult of that age, once our Lord Jesus Christ who was signified by them had come, came to an end and the sacraments of the new Testament had their beginning. Whoever, after the passion, places his hope in the legal prescriptions and submits himself to them as necessary for salvation and as if faith in Christ without them could not save, sins mortally. It does not deny that from Christ’s passion until the promulgation of the gospel they could have been retained, provided they were in no way believed to be necessary for salvation. But it asserts that after the promulgation of the gospel they cannot be observed without loss of eternal salvation.

(Council of Florence, Bull of Union with the Copts Cantate Domino)

The council’s teaching is evident and self-explanatory — no ‘hermeneutical key’ needed!

In his encyclical against Freemasonry in Italy (1892), Pope Leo XIII was speaking of Catholics when He lamented: “How can We bear to look upon His chosen people exposed to a constant and ever-present danger of apostasy, pushed toward error and vice, material miseries, and moral degradation?” (Custodi Di Quella Fede, n. 1; underlining added).

Similarly, Pope Pius XI in his first encyclical (1922) rightly referred to himself as “the leader of the chosen people” (Ubi Arcano Dei, n. 51).

On Mar. 25, 1928, the Holy Office under Pius XI released a decree by which it abolished the Amici Israel (Friends of Israel) association, which had become a threat to the integrity of Catholic doctrine on Judaism and the Church’s relationship with the apostate Jews. Here’s what that decree said about the Chosen People:

…the Catholic Church has always been accustomed to pray for the Jewish people, who were the depository of divine promises up until the arrival of Jesus Christ, notwithstanding their subsequent blindness, or rather, because of this very blindness. Moved by that charity, the Apostolic See has protected the same people from unjust ill-treatment, and just as it censures all hatred and enmity among people, so it altogether condemns in the highest degree possible hatred against the people once chosen by God, viz., the hatred that now is what is usually meant in common parlance by the term known generally as “anti-Semitism.”

(Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office, Decree Cum Supremae; underlining added.)

Pius XI affirmed the Supersessionist doctrine also in his beautiful Act of Consecration of the Human Race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus: “Turn Thine eyes of mercy towards the children of that race, once Thy chosen people: of old they called down upon themselves the Blood of the Savior; may It now descend upon them, a laver of redemption and of life” (underlining added).

Not surprisingly, Pope Pius XII likewise taught the very Supersessionist position ‘Abp.’ Fisher claims is “heresy”:

And first of all, by the death of our Redeemer, the New Testament took the place of the Old Law which had been abolished; then the Law of Christ together with its mysteries, enactments, institutions, and sacred rites was ratified for the whole world in the blood of Jesus Christ. For, while our Divine Savior was preaching in a restricted area — He was not sent but to the sheep that were lost of the house of Israel — the Law and the Gospel were together in force; but on the gibbet of his death Jesus made void the Law with its decrees, fastened the handwriting of the Old Testament to the Cross, establishing the New Testament in His bloodshed for the whole human race. “To such an extent, then,” says St. Leo the Great, speaking of the Cross of our Lord, “was there effected a transfer from the Law to the Gospel, from the Synagogue to the Church, from many sacrifices to one Victim, that, as our Lord expired, that mystical veil which shut off the innermost part of the temple and its sacred secret was rent violently from top to bottom.”

On the Cross then the Old Law died, soon to be buried and to be a bearer of death, in order to give way to the New Testament of which Christ had chosen the Apostles as qualified ministers….

But if our Savior, by His death, became, in the full and complete sense of the word, the Head of the Church, it was likewise through His blood that the Church was enriched with the fullest communication of the Holy Spirit, through which, from the time when the Son of man was lifted up and glorified on the Cross by His sufferings, she is divinely illumined. For then, as Augustine notes, with the rending of the veil of the temple it happened that the dew of the Paraclete’s gifts, which heretofore had descended only on the fleece, that is on the people of Israel, fell copiously and abundantly (while the fleece remained dry and deserted) on the whole earth, that is on the Catholic Church, which is confined by no boundaries of race or territory.

(Pope Pius XII, Encyclical Mystici Corporis, nn. 29-31; underlining added.)

Since the Catholic teaching on the matter is so clear, it is not surprising that we find it affirmed and repeated also in the teachings of approved Catholic authors.

For instance, in his famous Scripture commentary, the 19th-century scholar Fr. George Leo Haydock remarks that where Apoc 2:9 speaks of “them that say they are Jews and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan”, it is a reference to “those false teachers, who call themselves Jews and Israelites, and the chosen people of God, waiting for the coming of the Messias, but are not to be looked upon as such; having refused to own their true Messias, Jesus Christ, they are the Synagogue of Satan, the greatest enemies of the true faith” (source; italics given).

Another example comes from the 19th-century Jesuit Fr. Richard F. Clarke, who said: “We ought to remember that Catholics are, far more than the Jews were, the chosen people of God, and we are bound to love and honor them for their Master’s sake” (“The Ministry of Jesus: Short Meditations on the Public Life of Our Lord”, in Beautiful Pearls of Catholic Truth [Cincinnati, OH: Henry Sphar & Co., 1897], p. 542).

Similarly, Fr. Joachim Salaverri wrote in his 1955 treatise De Ecclesia Christi that “Christ not only preached a religious and universal Kingdom … but he also said that the religious economy of the O.T. [Old Testament] was going to be abrogated, and for it he substituted a new religious order” (Sacrae Theologiae Summa, vol. IB, n. 84; italics added).

All of this proves over and over again that Supersessionism is the authentic Roman Catholic position on the false Judaism that emerged in rejection of Jesus Christ. As a Dominican, ‘Abp.’ Fisher knows very well that that is the perennial Catholic teaching, but he rejects it in favor of the scandalous novelty of Vatican II. In fact, in his wretched lecture, the false shepherd of Sydney relates gleefully:

Commenting on the growing friendship between Jews and Catholics in his lifetime, Rabbi Apple told the story of a Catholic lay woman back in 1958, who worked in the office of the United Jewish Education Board, but feared entering a synagogue would go against her religion. By 2005, however, the Rabbi could host three cardinals at a synagogue function with no one batting an eyelid. Less than two decades later, the Catholic archbishop is offering a lecture in memory of the Rabbi in that same synagogue. That’s real progress since 1958!

How ironic that the year mentioned is 1958, the very year Pope Pius XII passed away, thereby opening the floodgates, as it were, for the Modernist revolution to begin. A passage from St. Paul’s Second Letter to the Thessalonians is not without relevance here:

Do not let anyone find the means of leading you astray. The apostasy must come first; the champion of wickedness must appear first, destined to inherit perdition. This is the rebel who is to lift up his head above every divine name, above all that men hold in reverence, till at last he enthrones himself in God’s temple, and proclaims himself as God. Do not you remember my telling you of this, before I left your company? At present there is a power (you know what I mean) which holds him in check, so that he may not shew himself before the time appointed to him; meanwhile, the conspiracy of revolt is already at work; only, he who checks it now will be able to check it, until he is removed from the enemy’s path. Then it is that the rebel will shew himself; and the Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of his mouth, overwhelming him with the brightness of his presence. He will come, when he comes, with all Satan’s influence to aid him; there will be no lack of power, of counterfeit signs and wonders; and his wickedness will deceive the souls that are doomed, to punish them for refusing that fellowship in the truth which would have saved them. That is why God is letting loose among them a deceiving influence, so that they give credit to falsehood; he will single out for judgement all those who refused credence to the truth, and took their pleasure in wrong-doing.

(2 Thessalonians 2:3-11; Mgr. Ronald Knox translation)

In this post we are not interested in commenting on Fisher’s lecture in its entirety, else we would never finish. We will, however, point out two more things mentioned in the speech that should not go uncommented.

Early on in his speech, Fisher reveals that apostate Judaism is present in his own family history:

So, my mother’s mother was a Jew and their mothers before them for umpteen generations. And though I am a Catholic and archbishop, like the apostle Paul I do not forget where I have come from. When we speak of Jews and Christians as family, it has a particular resonance for me.

The fact that his grandmother practiced apostate Judaism has nothing to do with the morality of the words and actions of Anthony Fisher in 2024. He may say that this is “where I have come from”, but all this does is reveal a certain emotional attachment and potential conflict of interest. Imagine standing before the Judgment Seat of God and answering to Our Lord that you confirmed the Talmudic Jews in their unbelief because your grandmother was one of them!

Towards the end of his lecture, Fisher manages to add insult to injury by referencing the blasphemous 1979 movie The Life of Brian by Monty Python. Although the portion he quoted  from it is not itself problematic, drawing it from such a foul movie that mocks Our Lord Jesus Christ and was deliberately made to offend, is entirely unacceptable and, frankly, speaks volumes.

In retrospect, it is a good thing that Fisher removed his pectoral cross for the occasion, lest anyone mistake him for a Roman Catholic prelate.

The times we live in are not just evil but absurd. So the ‘Archbishop’ of Sydney goes to a synagogue to tell today’s Jews that he believes it is heresy to say they are no longer God’s Chosen People but have been superseded in this by Catholics. While thus repudating the perennial Catholic doctrine of ‘Supersessionism’, he has no problem believing that this doctrine has itself been superseded by the theological freak show of Vatican II, especially its declaration Nostra Aetate.

It is not difficult to figure out just who the real heretic is.
