Significant timing; illuminating censure
Ukrainian priest 're-excommunicated'
"The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has announced the excommunication of a Ruthenian-rite priest in Ukraine, the KAI news service reports. Father Basil Kovpak is the head of the Priestly Society of Saint Josephat Kuntsevych (SSJK), a group with ties to the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) which has been active among Byzantine Catholics in the Ukraine since the early 1990s. Bishops of the SSPX-- themselves excommunicated because they were consecrated without approval from the Holy See-- have ordained priests for the SSJK."

Book Review: Tradition Persecuted in Western Ukraine by Fr. Basil Kovpak

NOW Comments: Although we're belated in catching up with this article, it still bears examination at a couple of levels. First, the timing is quite interesting as it comes in less than two weeks after Novus Ordo officials met with their schismatic Orthodox counterparts to pick at the Church's teaching on papal primacy. Fr. Kovpak is, of course, the furthest thing from "ecumenical" priest, so he can be seen as an annoyance to conciliar authorities, while as an Eastern Rite priest he's positively loathed by Orthodox authorities. The renewal of his 2003 "excommunication" can be perceived as a way for the counterfeit church to score points with the Eastern schismatics. Second, his censure sheds light on SSPX's real status with the Vatican and tears away the conciliatory mask worn by "Cardinal" Darío Castrillón Hoyos, who has repeatedly said through much of this year to anyone credulous enough to believe him, that the SSPX bishops, while "excommunicated" are nevertheless "inside the Church," but to use new church doublespeak, only in partial communion with it and adopting a schismatic attitude without being schismatic. The trouble for those who accept Hoyos' claim is that it's trumped by John Paul II in
Ecclesia Dei, the 1988 document that declared Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre and those he consecrated as having taken part in a schismatic act, and to make it clear he regarded them as completely severed from his church, he urged "all those who until now have been linked in various ways to the movement of Archbishop Lefebvre, that they may fulfill the grave duty of remaining united to the Vicar of Christ in the unity of the Catholic Church, and of ceasing their support in any way for that movement [emphasis added]." No "partial communion" there. This second censure is more significant than the first because the former, which came from the Ukrainian "prelate," was deemed null and void for lack of proper form and the latter was issued by the so-called Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which brings it figuratively speaking just down the hall from Hoyos' office, in an effort to cover the failings of the first, as it were. In sum, Fr. Kovpak's censure reveals that the closing of the gap between Modernist Rome and the SSPX is not nearly as imminent as many have thought and perhaps is but an illusion.

The Seeds of Revolution (on the infiltration of the Church)
"An apostate priest named Canon Roca was already saying at the end of the 1800s: "The liturgy, ceremonial, ritual and regulations of the Roman Church will shortly undergo a transformation at an ecumenical council... the Papacy will fall; it will die under the hallowed knife which the Fathers of the last Council will forge. The papal Caesar is a host (victim) crowned for the sacrifice." Excusing heresy with illogical contrivances
The enduring fallacy of Bp. Richard Williamson
"In Pascendi, Pius X nailed the unhooking of the subjective mind from objective reality as the foundation of the coherent Newfaith of the modernists’ Newchurch. What mental rest and spiritual relaxation to be able to lean on the one true religion given to us from outside and above by the one true God, without our having to pay heed to the mass of modern fantasies!

"However the Conciliar fantasies have taken such a grip on many of today’s churchmen that the temptation arises to consider that none of them are churchmen at all, in particular the last few Popes. But Pascendi can offer a way out of this temptation by its same teaching that subjectivism unhooks churchmen’s minds from reality. Are they fully aware of how mad they are, when virtually everyone shares in their madness? And if they are not fully aware, do they necessarily disqualify themselves as churchmen? Pascendi suggests to me that sedevacantism is not binding.

"By no means everyone agrees with letting the Conciliar churchmen off the hook in this way, but that is of secondary importance. Back to Pascendi – what is of primary importance is to give glory to God and to save our souls by submitting our minds to that one objective Faith which God has revealed, and without which nobody can please God. Back to Pascendi – what is of primary importance is to give glory to God and to save our souls by submitting our minds to that one objective Faith which God has revealed, and without which nobody can please God.…"

NOW Comments: As far back as we can remember, Bp. Williamson has used some of the most strained arguments one will ever encounter in a feeble attempt to extricate the conciliar "popes" from bearing any responsibility for their heretical words and deeds. Back in the 1990s he was writing about the inculpability of John Paul II by virtue of him being in a "liberal dream," based on the inadequate seminary training he had back in Poland. Last year Benedict XVI was given a free pass by Bp. Williamson because Ratzinger's "poor mind, however gifted, is sick," due to him being steeped in modern German philosophy. (See Novus Ordo Watch archive for August 2006.)

And what we find above is just a variation of this line of argument, only now the culprit is "subjectivism," which has led to a "mass of modern fantasies." Now this is what Bp. Williamson says has caused the "madness" of the churchmen. Elsewhere in his column he speaks about how the error of subjectivism "
threatened to undermine the objectivity of all Catholic dogma." Certainly, this was true in the time of Pope St. Pius X and remains so today, but, unfortunately, the flaw in Bp. Williamson's argument is that he leaves culpability out of equation, knowing that his position cannot possibly stand once this is introduced. Also omitted is the fact that St. Pius labeled pride and curiosity the two key faults leading to the apostasy of Modernism.

Yes, the error of subjectivism is at the heart of Modernism, but that in no way renders Modernists blameless or at least of diminished culpability. If it did, then St. Pius would have been wrong to excommunicate Modernists such as Fathers Alfred Loisy and George Tyrrell, because they would have been victims of a liberal dream or a modern fantasy and thus no more responsible than poor, confused Fathers Karol Wojtyla and Joseph Ratzinger. (One is permitted to wonder whether Bp. Williamson wants similarly to excuse the rebellion of Simon Magus, Arius, Martin Luther, John Calvin and other heresiarchs due to "mental impairment.")

It is noteworthy that Bp. Williamson never bothers to back up his statements with Church sources, which is completely reasonable because he can't. Once the magisterium is introduced to the discussion, the bishop's line of argumentation is shown to be severely wonting.

Why?

Because, to begin with, Canon Law posits that unless there is real mental impairment (or, say, coercion by another), than a person is deemed accountable for his actions. Now mental impairment doesn't mean someone buying into a false belief system, which is what Bp. Williamson is suggesting, it means reduced ability to comprehend. If Modernists were merely individuals confused into believing false teachings, then St. Pius X would be unjust to excommunicate them as they were incapable of knowing the wrongness of their position. Of course, we know that wasn't the case, as he held them completely accountable for going against the teaching of the Church.

Also noteworthy is that heresy and apostasy are two terms not used here by Bp. Williamson. Could it be that he's afraid his readers will start wondering why he's excusing Novus Ordo leaders who are spreading such poison? It well could be so. Yet heresy and apostasy are precisely what St. Pius X was battling. This is clear when we read the following renunciation of a Modernist proposition that His Holiness insisted be sworn by all those with positions of influence in the Church:

"I entirely reject the heretical misrepresentation that dogmas evolve and change from one meaning to another different from the one which the Church held previously...."

 from The Oath Against Modernism

Let's read a key phrase again: heretical misrepresentation. Not fantasies, liberal dreams, sick minds, modern madness or some other rhetorical write-off, but heretical misrepresentation. So who's interpreting Modernism correctly: St. Pius X or Bp. Williamson? They can't both be right.

Finally, as far as Bp. Williamson's argument that his letting these men "off the hook" is of "secondary importance" to the salvation of souls, we ask: If these men are not true Catholic authorities, then not adhering to them is of primary importance, because following false shepherds is most assuredly a danger to our souls!

Pope Saint Pius X:

should anybody, which may God forbid, be so rash as to defend any one of the propositions, opinions or teachings condemned in these documents [Pascendi and its companion anti-Modernist syllabus, Lamentabili] he falls, ipso facto, under the censure contained under the chapter "Docentes" of the constitution "Apostolicae Sedis," which is the first among the excommunications latae sententiae, simply reserved to the Roman Pontiff.

Democrats' secret weapon - How American bishops kept abortion legal for thirty years

NOW Comments:
There is nothing at all surprising in this document; it is, rather, exactly what we've come to expect from the USCCB, echoing legitimate Catholic teaching in one sentence and qualifying it away in the next. As the article suggests, it "seemed to offer something for everyone," pleasing both "pro-choice" and pro-life factions in the Novus Ordo church. After all the doubletalk, though, the bottom line, quite simply, is that for these "bishops" the life of the unborn very definitely is a negotiable issue. Let them wax eloquent all they want about fighting the "culture of death," when you cut through the rhetoric they are (aside from a precious few weak-kneed, ineffectual exceptions) a collection of tinplate hypocrites who would to a man have no problem rubbing elbows at posh dinners with pro-abortion politicians after giving them communion earlier in the day. Vatican-Orthodox commission agrees on primacy of Pope; differ on significance
"A joint commission working to heal the 1,000-year split between the Catholic and Orthodox churches has agreed the Pope has primacy over all bishops but disagrees over just what that authority permits him to do."

Reality Check:

"Certainly, no one who claims allegiance to Catholic theology can simply declare the doctrine of primacy null and void, especially not if he seeks to understand the objections and evaluates with an open mind the relative weight of what can be determined historically. Nor is it possible, on the other hand, for him to regard as the only possible form and, consequently, as binding on all Christians the form this primacy has taken in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The symbolic gestures of Pope Paul VI and, in particular, his kneeling before the representative of the Ecumenical Patriarch [the schismatic Patriarch Athenagoras] were an attempt to express precisely this and, by such signs, to point the way out of the historical impasse."

Prophet and 'patron saint' of the Vatican II revolution
'A great Christian': 30 Days interview on 'beatification' of Fr. Antonio Rosmini
30 Days: Rosmini’s best known work is certainly The Five Wounds of the Holy Church. Put on the Index, it was fully rehabilitated before the Index of Forbidden Books was itself abolished… [NOW Comments: Not so. Paul VI's attempted abolition of the Index occurred in 1966, whereas the supposed full rehabilitation did not come until 2001 with a
decree issued by then-"Cardinal" Joseph Ratzinger, some 35 years later.]
'Cardinal' José Saraiva Martins: It’s a book in some ways prophetic, anticipatory, perhaps too much so for its times. And the destiny of prophets, in the Bible but also, alas, in the history of the Church, is often that of being misunderstood and persecuted.
30 Days: Another of the wounds pointed out by Rosmini had to do with the liturgy…
Saraiva Martins: Rosmini understood the drama of a liturgy that was no longer comprehensible to the people and, often, not even by the celebrants themselves. Also in this his intuition anticipated the movement for liturgical renewal and of the needs expressed in the Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium
of Vatican II.

NOW Comments: Fr. Rosmini's serious errors were condemned by the Church, and Rosmini retracted them (see Denzinger 1891ff., note 2), but, remember, it's these very errors (in some cases, heresies) that make him a hero to the conciliar church, it's these errors that John Paul II and Ratizinger went to such great lengths to "rehabilitate." Why? Simply because in the errors found in The Five Wounds of the Holy Church and elsewhere in his writings, Rosmini anticipated certain errors (noted in the accompanying links) that would be heartily embraced by the Novus Ordo church and which it has no intention of retracting.

But when the Central Reform Congregation offered its synagogue for Sunday's ordination of two women in a ceremony disavowed by the Roman Catholic church, it drew the ire of church officials and a pledge to never again partner with the congregation."

NOW Comments: Interesting to note that the "conservative" Burke is said here to be "advocating for immigrants (read illegal immigrants, still more proof of his phoniness.

Big budget film slips atheism through backdoor
Is The Golden Compass anti-Catholic?
"The fantasy film is based on a novel by Philip Pullman called Northern Lights. It is already attracting attention in the US for avoiding much of the book’s perceived anti-Catholic rhetoric. (. . . From the trailer:) Narrator: “[This] is a world dominated by the Magisterium, which seeks to control all humanity, and whose greatest threat, is the curiosity of a child.…”

"There are so many other details in the story that I could name as examples of the venomous anti Christian and particularly anti Catholic bigotry in these books. The ‘tempter’ is an ex nun who flat out tells the two children that Christianity is a mistake…and there is also a thinly veiled reference to sex when the book says her greatest time of ‘bliss’ was not when she was a nun. She also goes on to tell these two 12 year old kids that she was not married but lived with a man for four years. Then there is a bizarre story of the two male ‘angels’ who are in love with each other."

Christian groups claim pro-atheist 'stealth campaign' in Golden Compass

NOW Comments: It's a little surprising that even a reasonably decent Novus Ordo "Catholic" would agree to star in this movie, but A-list actress Nicole Kidman is doing exactly that, playing what in Pullman's books is a very vicious caricature of a manipulative woman who supports the Magisterium (in other words, the Catholic Church). Granted, Kidman has said she wouldn't knowingly take part in an anti-Catholic film and The Golden Compass has largely downplayed the explicit anti-Catholic themes in the novels, but still she knew that already, conceding the film 'has been watered down a little.' Despite her knowing the antireligious nature of the trilogy, she's also signed on to appear in the sequels. But what does that matter, it could be argued, if the Catholic-bashing has been toned down? What matters is that the novels haven't had a great deal of sales outside of the U.K., so if the movies are successful they will spike the market for the books in other countries and those books are overtly atheistic, with the "happy ending" of the series being the death of God (identified as the feeble, senile "Authority"). Kidman's failure to denounce Pullman's books, while helping bring them a larger readership, does not speak well of her love for a Church she claims is "part of my essence."

Pharmacies not stocking abortion drugs are targeted as lawbreakers
"A federal court Thursday confirmed that the right of Washington pharmacists to obey their conscience when they object to dispensing abortion-inducing drugs on religious grounds will be protected while a lawsuit by two pharmacists and a pharmacy owner moves forward.  The court halted newly passed regulations, which the pharmacy and pharmacists are challenging, until a decision is reached in the case."

NOW Comments: Catholics must view the passage of such regulations as ominous. Yes, this ruling is an important victory in the ongoing culture war against those who seek to impose a godless totalitarianism on America (and in other nations where the war is being waged), but this is hardly the end of the matter. For, if a government can pass laws requiring pharmacies to stock abortifacients, then what is to stop it from mandating that bookstores carry immoral works or clothing stores immodest fashions? And moving to other fields of endeavor, what's to stop it from dictating what news sources report or what priests preach from the pulpit? These types of regulations must be fought tooth and nail until their proponents are clearly shown to be the enemies of God and man and forced out of positions of power or else a stealth Communism will be soon imposed.

Women to go ahead with 'ordination' ceremony despite warnings
"The Archdiocese of Saint Louis has warned two Saint Louis women they will excommunicate themselves if they undergo a planned “ordination ceremony” scheduled for this Sunday."

'Sacrilege: Sexual abuse in the Catholic Church'
"The bishops made excuses, but the excuses did not excuse. Bishops claimed they were only following the advice of psychologists, but they put abusive priests in parishes even when the psychologists warned against it. Why hadn't bishops ever gotten angry at abusers? Why were abusers treated so gently, when men who left the priesthood to marry were treated so harshly? Why had bishops lied to parents? Why hadn't they disciplined their clergy, when they seemed so eager to micromanage everything else in America, from what married couples did in bed to what the government did about immigration?"
